You can now apply for a crew position for TG15. In order for TG15 to be the best TG ever, we need your help.

So head on over to wannabe.gathering.org read the crew descriptions and apply.

Processing
As every year it takes some time to process all applications that we receieve so please don't fear if you don't get an answer straight away, as we will not begin allowing admission to crew before the 3rd of november.

The crew
To be a part of the crew at The Gathering is something really special. We get together once every year to make The Gathering come true. There's all kinds of amazing stuff to do if you have the skills and/or will.

We have Event with all their skills in making stage design, including lighting, sound and AV, and their surrounding decorations bring the arena to life. They're also behind compos, both gaming and creative, they're on stage making fun and off stage making sure all the fun is captured on tape.

Then there's Security who keep us all safe, among other things they make sure no troublemakers enter the venue. Their Medic team will assist those who have a sudden need for medical assistance.

There's Tech, the people whom every year continue to design one of the world's largest temporary networks. They are responsible for what we need of servers (DHCP and much, much more) and provide support to our participants.

As you're reading this we obviously also have our own Info-crew, who makes systems such as Wannabe, they write for gathering.org and all our other information channels. They will help you from the Info:desk during the party and handle any press related matters.

Last, but not least, there is Core, and not as mystical as they sound they do what everyone else does not. They make food for the crew, they handle logistics, sponsors and whatever else might come up.

Still interested, familiarize yourself with the various crews by reading through the descriptions at wannabe.gathering.org now and apply!

And if you want to look your best, we've gathered some useful tips below:

  • Make sure what you write is easily understandable. Stick to bokmål, nynorsk or English. A well written application with proper language might lead to a better first impression.

  • Let the chief know why you should be chosen for this crew. Be specific – if you want to contribute with your "experience" or "being a positive addition to the crew", you're not really saying anything.

  • Describe any relevant background or experience that you feel might come in handy.

  • Remember that your chief only sees your application, nothing more – he or she cannot guess what skills you have if you do not present them. The text field might look small, but don't let that stop you from being thorough.

  • Let a friend or parent review your application. Some extra feedback might give you that extra edge.

  • Consider carefully whether you want your choices to be prioritized or not. If your first choice is a bit too ambitious, it might be hard to get into your second or third choice. The reason for this is simply that the chiefs mainly look at the applicants who have their crew as first priority, and by the time your first choice is rejected, your second or third choice of crew might be filled up. Make sure you read the descriptions of the crews you apply to properly, and answer any additional questions as best as you can.

  • (Ninja tip: Make yourself known. This can be achieved by hanging out at our forums, our IRC-channel and participating at other parties, or even in another part of the TG-crew. This is a common long term strategy for those seeking admittance to some of the more demanding crews.)

<![CDATA[ Highlights from day 4 ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/140/57/Highlights-from-day-4 The last day of TG14 was filled with highlights from games, creative competitions and touches of TG-traditions.

For a lot of us, the saturday at TG is about spending that last amount of energy and strength. Some run in a line through the halls, some lose their voice calling out for Arne and a lucky few win comptetions and prizes.

We have put together a highlight reel from day 4 so you can relive the awesomeness that is saturday night in Vikingskipet as many times as you want.

It takes time to
crown a champion with 105 people participating.

Adam thought the overall skill-level in the competition was fair, with some "up-and-coming" players. Despite this,
the world champion made it to the top without any trouble.

The final match was played against Vegard Nyeng. According to last years winner and competition admin second running, Mads André Valderhaug, Adam had no problems smashing the opponent.

Vegard got the full experience of meeting one of the big names in the game, and was not at all disappointed to place second. When asked if he thought the road to the finals was difficult, he brings up the challenging second fight against third place winner Philip Rothshild.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Adam before TG, click here to read the interview.

They're sitting between the Creative desk and the Battery stand. You can try their games and get answers on anything you want to ask them.

DOS Studios has already won a BAFTA Award (Britain's version of the Oscars) for the game «Size DOES Matter». It's a rhythm based game for mobile and tablet, which is due out in a few months time.

4 Bit Games is a completely fresh studio working on the game «ORBIT», a competitive sofa game for up to four players where you fight in space! It's due out in May. At the moment they have a Steam Greenlight campaign running, and they would appreciate your vote.

Both these companies are pretty new, and they can tell you about their experience if you're interested in doing the same.

    Support indie companies

There are at least four other games on Steam Greenlight who also need some votes:

    - Antagonist with the third person horror adventure game «Through the Woods».

    - Sarepta Studio with the co-op adventure game «Shadow Puppeteer».

    - Moondrop with physics game «Amphora».

    - Inconspicuous Creations with the strategy game «Heroes in the Fast Lane».

Plus, we cannot forget the prize ceremony for all the creative competitions. The day kicks off at 12:00 with deadlines in numerous competitions. Here we find the deadline in Game Development, Freestyle Video, AI Programming and Fast Game Development. Keep track of times, because you don't want to miss those deadlines!

At the same time we start a talk about 3D Sculpting in the Creative Lounge. Come by to watch and learn! If you've submitted a contribution in one of the creative competitions, come by and pick up your exclusive Creative TG t-shirt that will be given out at the same time. Last but not least, we also start the Game Dev Showcase at 12 – definitely a time to be in the lounge with other words.

14:00 we finally kick off the AI competition. This is a very entertaining competition where skilled programmers have created players that think themselves, and play against each other. Bugs and action guaranteed!

Two hours later at 16:00 we hit one of the last deadlines this year, this is the deadline for the Combined Demo/Intro competition. Do not forget it if you work on a demo! At the same time you can come by the lounge for part 2 of the multicopter workshop, where participants will try to build a multicopter.

At 18:00 we get the last two deadlines – The Gathering Programming Champtionship and the Hacking Competition. Watch out for these!

Now you finally have a little time to hang out in the lounge before we move towards the stage for the last composhow.

Here we start with the final in AI, before we move on the Fast Game Dev, Game Dev, Freestyle Video, Fast Demo and Combined Demo/Intro. After that, remember to vote immediately, then hang out with awesome people in the lounge, before the prize ceremony at 22:30.

We hope you had a wonderful creative The Gathering, and can return home with a lot of new knowledge and inspiration.

If you want to see us again before the next TG, come to Solskogen or Kindergarden – these are two pure demoparties that are held within an hour with car from Oslo. They are held respectively in July and November. If you think this sounds interesting, come by the lounge and talk to us, so we can tell you more about demo parties!

And last but not least, are mentors are here for you! If you're wondering about something, come by and ask for a mentor in your field, and we will help you out!

In the northern end of the ship you will find ChillOut. Take a break from gaming and try something new. At ChillOut you can sit down in a comfortable chair and relax, pearl yourself a piece of plastic jewelry or try one of the many board games available.

    See their schedule below.

In addition, they can tempt you with free slush and fresh fruit, free hugs, or just someone socialize with.

    - The idea behind ChillOut is to provide the participants with alternative activities.

    - We wish to welcome all participants and crew to ChillOut!

    KANDU

KANDU is an organization which, among other things, makes The Gathering possible. It is the board of KANDU who are responsible for electing the members of the management team of The Gathering, supervising our economy, and help where help is needed.

But KANDU is so much more than just TG. They regularly arrange interesting lectures, barbeque- and game nights, or borrow equipment to smaller arrangements who might find themselves in need of it. The last few years they've bought equipment for a stunning two million NOK, whereof a good part of said equipment is found in the hall we're located in right now.

When you bought your ticket for The Gathering, you were also signed up as a member of KANDU. Her you will receive multiple benefits, and are given the right to vote during the General Assembly, should you want to. Read more at kandu.no

<![CDATA[ Behind the scenes ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/49/57/Behind-the-scenes Before the ship is filled with participants, computers, and caffeinated drinks, there are a lot of details that need attention. The crew of The Gathering works long nights making sure everything is in order before the doors open, and the nerds pour in. The planning begins already months ahead, when the organizers sit down and agrees to everything concerning The Gathering 2014.

The editorial staff has had the pleasure of speaking to two of the many volunteers who make sure everything goes according to plan.

    Tech:Server

With his twelfth year as crew at The Gathering, we have with us Knut Auvor Grythe, Co-Chief of Tech:server. In addition to aiding Tech:Net, they also configure our DHCP, DNS, and e-mail servers. During TG they are critical, making sure the network is actually working, by continuously monitoring both the flow of traffic and the uptime for the network.

    - Every year before The Gathering, it is necessary with a review of the source code from the previous year. There's usually a lot of dirty hacks from the year before that needs attention.

The sourcecode, which is also publicly available for everyone to see on GitHub (https://github.com/tech-server), is reused every year, with amendments of course.

The exciting part of working in Tech:Server, Knut Auvor claims, is to be able to find new creative solutions that would otherwise not be valid in a work-setting. What works in a job-setting wouldn't be guaranteed to work at The Gathering, and vice versa..

One must also include that the purchase of candy and Coca Cola is a vital part of the preparations. - We've had a consumption of Coca Cola as high as 50-60 liters.

    Event

With us we also have Guro Faller, our very own Event:Organizer. With a huge area of responsibilities, including but not limited to the scene, game, and the creative, there are a lot of balls in the air to juggle at once, needless to say, this requires thorough planning and attention to detail.

When everything is to be prepared, it is important to double-check any details; - We are covering the studio production, livestream, lectures, workshops, and last but not least, entertainment. Most importantly is perhaps the booking of special guests and artists. This year we can among other things tempt with bloggers from Geek and Sundry, which will co-star as hosts in our studio, something we are all looking forward to.

    - Our greatest challenge is perhaps finding something the participants enjoy, and can feel inspired by. Perhaps they learn a new programming language, pick up a new interest, or find a new channel to follow on YouTube.

What i'm looking forward to the most is motion capture, Guro says, as it will be the first time ever this comes to The Gathering. Most exciting for the participants is that they themselves will be given the opportunity to put on these special motion-capture suits, and partake in the fun themselves.

Something else that is also new for this year are the "lightning talks", a new concept where the participants can share their passions, interests, or whatever it must be about their chosen subject of choice for a brief five minutes. We hope that as many as possible will want to join, both as a lecturer and as audience.

This year, short-term parking has moved to the asphalt parking lot, on the west side of the Viking ship. If you arrive the computer party by public transport, you end up at the south side of the Viking ship.

Long-term, camping and trailer parking is at the same place as before.

    - From 15 to 60 cars

Safety officer Harald Christiansen says that the change has been made to allow additional cars on short-term parking at the same time.

    - Because we loops cars throughout the parking lot, we can accept a total of 60 cars in the short-term parking. Previously it has only been room for 15 cars at a time.

Harald Christiansen is happy with the new parking system.

Christiansen says that this has been a collaboration with the police.

    - This is the first time we change the car parking system in six years.

    - Remember that you can only stay in the short-term parking for 10 minutes with a driver, he reminds us.

It is often easier to find a place to sleep there, than on the tribunes. However, as the Easter nights can be chilly, the tent might get a bit chilly, too.

The participant ombudsman Sondre Langenes encourages all participants to bring a warm sleeping bag and a good sleeping pad:

    – Ideally you should bring a sleeping bag that handles sub-zero temperatures, is his recomendation.

He also wants to remind everyone to take a look at the official TG packing list before leaving for Hamar.

Check out the packing list here.

Something extra to think about this year, is that Bunnpris in Hamar no longer exists. That means that you should remember to buy what you need before you arrive, or on Wednesday before the shops close for the holiday.

If you arrive tuesday night, you ought to bring some bbq food. From 11 pm we'll fire up the barbeques, so that you won't be hungry.

<![CDATA[ Nerd Royal - king or queen of nerds ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/37/57/Nerd-Royal-king-or-queen-of-nerds Begrepet «nerd» har gått gjennom en real transformasjon.

Reglementet for Nerd Royal finner du her!

    1. Orbit
    2. Mario Kart
    3. Donkey Kong
    4. TetriNET
    5. Kinect Sports
    6. CS:GO
    7. Audiosurf
    8. Stepmania
    9. SC2
    10. Trackmania

<![CDATA[ Two new competitions ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/36/57/Two-new-competitions We now have three exciting competitions for you who love making videos!

There is of course the traditional Freestyle Video where there are no limitations except the length and ambition to tell anything. Show the documentary film about the birds of Svalbard, or the music video for your band that you have made as long as it does not have a length of more than five minutes.

And now we introduce two brand new competitions for you!

The Ten Second Movie competition challenges you to make a masterpiece of a video that lasts for only ten seconds! Get your camera or pull out old fashioned pen and paper to make it. Animate or shoot your ten second movie. Watch a film you want to recreate and pull out the main plot points or just your favorite scene and recreate it in your own vision.

In the Visual Effects competition, you may show off your skills in special effects. Use a clip that we provide to create exactly what you want. Edit the colors, create explosions, new dimensions, add robots, remix it to what suits you!

We hope to see a lot of interesting video entries this year! Good luck!

    <![CDATA[ Check in before TG ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/34/57/Check-in-before-TG Check-in

Tickets are digital and can be modified by the owner at any time. It is very important that it is your name on the ticket you are using. You can print out a check-in proof with the ticket information at the time you completed the pre-check-in. You only need the check-in proof and ID to gain access to The Gathering.

In short: The ticket itself is digital in the sense that it only exists in Geekevents. The ticket's status in Geekevents decides whether it is valid or not.

UNDER 16: If you are under 16 years old, you must bring the consent form, or scan and upload it to Geekevents.

    Just like at the airport

To compare this with something you might be more experienced with, let's say you are at an airport:

Your check-in proof is the reference number you have when you go to the check-in counter. When you check in you get a boarding pass, which in our case will be a bracelet you get when you arrive at Vikingskipet.

If you go to the airport with a ticket which has been canceled, you obviously won't be able to fly. Likewise, you won't be able to enter TG if your ticket has someone else's name on it, even if you have completed the pre-check-in.

This ticket is for those of you who attend The Gathering to participate creatively, either by attending seminars, workshops or competitions, but also if you want to learn some new tricks of the creative trade.

To buy this ticket you need to write a short application in which you explain why you are interested in it. A good application includes links to earlier work if you have it (demos, artwork, music, cosplaying, videos etc.) and a description of them. You write the application in Geekevents.

We have Creative tickets and Creative No-Seat tickets. In addition we have foreigner versions of both these types of tickets. A Creative No-Seat ticket is suitable for participants who don't need a huge workspace this Easter, and perhaps are planning on bringing a laptop only. Although this ticket is for participants who attend TG for the creative competitions and seminars, you can participate in all the compos, not only the creative ones. The remix kit can be downloaded here: Torgny - Nights

What's new this year is that you have one month to complete your remix. You can start now, but you submit the remix at The Gathering. We are looking forward to hearing your version!

Torgny Amdam has released his second album as a solo artist. His new album "Oil Panic" consists of nine tracks of original beats, hypnotic vocals and creative, unexpected melodies.

Lead singer Maria Due contributes to three of the songs. The music on "Oil Panic" is in dialogue with top 40 pop, but also characterized by an experimental brutality . The album is also inspired by the new "attitude" that characterized New York in the early 80s, when disco met punk and punk met hiphop.

In fall 2013, the Oslo-based artist released the album's first single in the form of "Grønn Extra", which is also the opening track on the album. The song received good response and was later remixed by Mother North aka Melkeveien.

Here's what Torgny himself says about "Oil Panic": "Hopefully, the record can be experienced in several ways, depending on whether the listener is most concerned about oil politics, sexuality, or simply sonic journeys of electronic art."

<![CDATA[ Jump into the film world! ]]> https://archive.gathering.org/tg14/news/21/57/Jump-into-the-film-world Of course you've seen Gollum, but do you know how this character was created? How about becoming one yourself!

We have had many interesting talks and lectures at The Gathering earlier, but 2014 will be something quite extraordinary, even by TG-standard. At TGs second day Roger Gihlemoen and Stian Sørensen will talk about motion capture - a lecture where you can be involved! During the lecture it will be possible to take on motion capture suit and jump into the film world.

    What is motion capture?

Motion capture is a method to give animated characters natural movement and behavior. By using motion capture it is possible to give the animation several more nuances of life that would not be possible by just animating the character. Motion capture using the whole body is called Performance capture, hence the using the actors full range of feeling, facial expressions, body language and movement. Motion capture has a variety of suitable areas for usage. At The Gathering will Roger and Stian show and tell us how it is used in games and movies.

    How is it done?

A setup with 18 high frequency cameras taking 100 pictures a second of humans in the suite with sensors rigged to it. A camera fastened to the head makes capturing both face and body at the same time and simultaneously. The camera also follow the pupils and eye movement to fulfill the credibility of the animation and the movements in the character as it is used as a character in everything from a game to a movie. ]]>

We strongly encourage you to register if you're not represting an established news outlet. If you do not, you maybe turned down at the door and that's not nice for you or for us. With that being said, we're a computer party, that means we would love to have you if you make your own great content and have the visitors or views (on sites like Twitch, Youtube, etc) to show it.

As a member of the press you will get:

    • Access to a quiet room.
    • Refreshments! (We've got coffee, tea and sodas. It's easter so who knows maybe the bunny shows up with some candy.)
    • Working space with the best view of the venue.
    • Extended access to TG14.
