Demo Making Guidelines

The art of successful demomaking

You probably want your demo to look its best when shown on the big screen, right? Well, here are a few golden rules to remember:

DON'T make it too long! Leave your cool, groundbreaking effects on the screen long enough for everyone to enjoy your hard work, but not so long as to make it boring.

DON'T make it too repetitive. We've seen your effect already, and there are limits to the variation you can do with different textures.

DON'T make it too dark. Remember that the darkest dark you will get on a big screen is limited by the amount of light in the surrounding area. If your demo is dominated by dark colors, you risk making a smudgy grey mess of it all.

DON'T have small tiny details

DON'T switch screenmodes during the demo. Projectors usually need some time to readjust between screen mode changes. This may lead to a nice blue screen with the text "adjusting image" while your super-megacool effect should be showing.

DO make your demo catchy, cool, impressive, interesting, innovative, fluid and phat.

So you think it's just about slapping some effects together? Well, you're wrong! There are many things who make up a good demo, and on this page we will go through them as well as give you some extra tips on how to make your demo look the best on the big screen.
